Budget gains support online

WHITE TWP. | A parents group has headed online with its support for the local school budget.

Members of Quality Education Starts Today, or Quest, have launched wt-quest.org, a Web site offering a breakdown of the White Township Consolidated School budget, including numerous pie charts.

"The Web site is providing information that's much more user-friendly than you might see in a line-item budget," said member Steve Muscat, the father of a kindergartener and a second-grade student.

The Web site offers information on a state law that limits school spending, how to register to vote on the budget and budget meetings, including the March 27 public hearing.

The Web site is the group's latest effort to see the proposed $7.7 million school budget pass in a public vote April 18. Other efforts include e-mails, phone calls and yard signs.

Last year's school budget was defeated 293-389. At the time, school officials attributed its defeat, in part, to the write-in candidacy of Brookfield resident Rita Foti, who opposed the budget.

Quest members say they are still fighting opposition to the budget from senior citizens, though they acknowledge some seniors support the school budget.

Quest members support the budget because they say it involves responsible spending, member Lisa Roschewsk said.

"It's not frivolous spending at all, this is what we call a maintenance budget," she said. "There's only certain numbers for the budget that there's room to change, and that's what we're trying to show."
