PHILLIPSBURG | For a two-week period ending Monday, the Phillipsburg School District opened up a paid sick day provision of district employee union contracts.

Included are the education secretaries unit, the paraprofessionals unit, the custodial and maintenance unit, the Phillipsburg Education Association and the administrators and supervisors associations, according to school board documents.

Essentially, qualifying employees retiring after about 18 or 20 years in the district could have been paid for a maximum of 90 unused sick days, which is more than the approximately 52.5 unused sick days the contracts typically provide for, district Business Administrator Bill Poch said. They must have accumulated about 180 unused sick days.
