LOPATCONG TWP. | The Lopatcong Township
School Board filled one position Tuesday and learned of another
vacancy.
Board members approved an agreement
to hire longtime administrator William Caldwell as interim superintendent.
They also accepted five-year board member Greg McGann's resignation.
"It's been very interesting to
be an administrator and a board member, as well," McGann said.
He is a principal in an East Brunswick
school, which also means full days and long commutes to Lopatcong
board meetings, he said.
He said the timing of his decision
was related to the superintendent search recently begun; he thought
it best to step down now to allow a new member to participate
in the process.
He said he is grateful for his
time on the board, and outgoing Superintendent Mike Rossi and
other board members thanked him for his dedication and insight.
Rossi is leaving the district soon
to become the Roxbury School District superintendent. Board President
Terry Glennon described Rossi's three-year tenure as outstanding
and credited him with helping improve education there each year.
While the board searches for a
permanent replacement, Rossi continues meeting with Caldwell to
ease the transition. Caldwell is scheduled to begin June 25 at
a rate of $580 a day until February without benefits.
If board members find a superintendent
before February, they can discontinue Caldwell's service with
two weeks' notice.
Caldwell was superintendent of
the North Warren Regional School District for seven and a half
years. Before that, he was superintendent for 12 years in Cumberland
County, he said.
He served as an interim superintendent
five other times.
